It seems particularly appropriate that the recent Sotheby’s auction of the late Princess Grace of Monaco’s dresses coincided with American and European spring 2008 runways. The princess, one of the most renowned beauties of the 20th century, was one of the century’s style icons. Even before her storybook marriage to the dashing Prince Rainier of Monaco, Grace Kelly the actress was already a household name in the U.S., where her wholesome yet sophisticated look defined “classic elegance.”
Indeed, her well-to-do family background, her cool blonde beauty figure, and her ladylike wardrobe were immensely influential on what later would become classic American WASP style.
Kelly always seemed to be wearing the right look at the right time. “Whether sailing in capris or greeting heads of state in a tiara, America’s favorite princess had a uniquely fresh spirit and unpretentious style,” write the editors of Bazaar in a recent tribute. “She also understood the importance of always looking the part.”
With more attention being paid these days, on and off the runway, to occasion dressing, remembering Princess Grace’s contribution to fashion and style is increasingly relevant. Princess Grace’s younger sister Lizanne Le Vine once said: “Our mother was a stickler for dressing appropriately for the occasion. I am sure mother’s influence was responsible for Grace’s white gloves—and hats.”
When pregnant with her first child, the current Prince Albert of Monaco, Princess Grace shielded her belly with a large, rectangular Hermes handbag. The bag, still the luxury goods house’s strongest seller, became known forever as “the Kelly bag” and remains a status symbol.
